History

Aeronautical Engineers Australia (AEA) was founded in 1978 by Graham Swannell to meet the emerging need for aeronautical engineering support for the Australian general aviation community and has grown to become one of Australia's leading aviation consultancy and aircraft design firms. Today, AEA continues to offer this service to general aviation, but has also expanded to offer this same engineering support special mission operators, defence, aeromedical operators, and aircraft manufacturers, as well as to airlines through its sister company Airline Technical Services.

In addition, AEA provides a large range of standard products and kits to the industry as well as approved manufacturing capibilites through partner businesses.

Role

Under Civil Aviation Regulation 42U (CAR42U), any modification or repair that is carried out on an Australian aircraft must be done in accordance with 'approved data'. This approved data is usually contained within the aircraft's manuals (aircraft maintenance manual, structural repair manual, component maintenance manuals etc) issued by the aircraft's manufacturer. However, sometimes there is damage to the aircraft that is outside the scope of these manuals or the operator wishes to modify the aircraft to help it perform a specific function (aerial firefighting, search and rescue) or alter the aircraft in some other way. To ensure that the aircraft continues to be airworthy (i.e. safe to fly), the repair or modification must be examined by an aeronautical engineer so that the many complex factors that affect aircraft flight, structures and systems can be assessed and the design change approved as airworthy. To do this the engineer assesses the design of the modification or repair against the airworthiness requirements for the aircraft and then must justify that the design meets these requirements through the use of analysis, testing and experience. If the design has been shown to meet the airworthiness requirements it may be approved under Civil Aviation Regulation 35 (CAR35) and is hence 'approved data', satisfying CAR42U.

Provisions similar to CAR42U exist for how to and what to use when performing maintenance on an aircraft under CAR42V. If maintenance personell wish to deviate from the aircraft's approved maintenance data, the materials and proceedures need to be approved under CAR36A.

AEA, along with other similar approved persons around Australia, is an approved design authority under CAR35 and CAR36 (for the approval of replacement components). AEA is also approved under the Papua New Guinea Civil Aviation Rules Part 146 which mirrors CAR35 for PNG registered (P2 registered) aircraft.

Locations

AEA currently maintains four offices:

Perth
Our longest established office is located at Jandakot Airport with a staff of eight aeronautical engineers. Perth is the capital of Western Australia and is one of the world's most livable cities and offers a vibrant but relaxed dynamic which is attractive to families as well as singles. Famous for its clean, modern lines, gorgeous waterways, and friendly people, Perth enjoys a Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and cool wet winters.

Sydney
In August 2000, AEA combined with HSJ Aviation and has since maintained its third office at Bankstown Airport in Sydney with fourteen qualified engineering staff (plus John Stewart-Jones and Bronwyn Hicks from HSJ). Sydney was the site of Australia's first settlement and the visitor can feel a sense of history from Circular Quay in the east to Parramatta in the west and on to the Blue Mountains. Sydney is a large and busy city which offers magnificent waterways and proximity to famous beaches such as Manly and Bondi, the Hunter Valley, and ski slopes as well as the Sydney Opera House and Darling Harbour.

Brisbane
Our newest office is located in Clontarf, on the northern beaches of Brisbane with 2 senior engineers. Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, and offers a relaxed tropical environment in a modern vibrant city. Only a short drive away are the magnificent beaches of the Gold Coast, the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and the beauty of the rainforests. Famous for being the modern centre of aviation in Australia, Brisbane is the sunny place to work in Aeronautical Engineering.
